Hawn was born in Washington, DC, to Edward Rutledge Hawn (a band musician who played at major events in Washington) and Laura Steinhoff (a jewelery shop/ dance school owner); she has a sister, Patricia, and had a brother, Edward, who died before she was born. She was raised in Takoma Park, Maryland. Her father, a descendant of Edward Rutledge (a signer of the Declaration of Independence), was a Presbyterian of part German and part Dutch descent. Her mother was Jewish-American, the daughter of Max Steinhoff and Fanny Weiss, immigrants from Hungary; Hawn was raised in the Jewish religion, although she attended church and the family did celebrate Christmas.
Hawn began taking ballet and tap dance lessons at the age of three, and danced in the chorus of the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo production of The Nutcracker in 1955. She made her stage debut in 1961, playing Juliet in a Virginia Stage Company production of Romeo and Juliet. By 1964, she ran and instructed a ballet school, having dropped out of American University, where she was majoring in drama.
In 1964, Hawn, who graduated from Montgomery Blair High School, made her professional dancing debut in a production of Can-Can at the Texas Pavilion of the New York World’s Fair. She began working as a professional dancer a year later, and appeared as a go-go dancer in New York City.

Thurman was born in Boston, Massachusetts. Her mother, Nena Birgitte Caroline von Schlebrügge (b. 1941), was a fashion model who was born in Mexico City, Mexico, to German nobleman Friedrich Karl Johannes von Schlebrügge and Birgit Holmquist, who was from Trelleborg, Sweden. Thurman’s father, Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman, was born in New York City to Elizabeth Dean Farrar, a stage actress, and Beverly Reid Thurman, Jr., an Associated Press editor and U.N. translator. Thurman’s mother was briefly married in 1964 to LSD guru Timothy Leary after the two were introduced by Salvador Dalí; she married Thurman’s father in 1967. Thurman’s father, a recognized scholar and professor at Columbia University of Indo-Tibetan Buddhist studies, was the first westerner to become a Tibetan Buddhist monk. He gave his children a Buddhist upbringing: Uma is named after an Uma Chenpo (in Tibetan; Mahamadhyamaka in Sanskrit, meaning “Great Middle Way”). She has three brothers, Ganden (b. 1971), Dechen (b. 1973) and Mipam (b. 1978), and a half-sister named Taya (b. 1960) from her father’s previous marriage. She and her siblings spent extended amounts of time in Almora, India as children, and the Dalai Lama would sometimes visit their home.
Since Professor Thurman moved between various universities, the family often relocated when Uma was a child. She grew up mostly in Amherst, Massachusetts and Woodstock, New York. Thurman is described as having been an awkward and introverted young girl who was frequently teased as a child for her large frame, unique angular bone structure, unusual name (sometimes using the name “Uma Karen” instead of her birth-name), and size 11 feet (Thurman’s famously large feet would later be lovingly filmed by Quentin Tarantino in the films he made with her). Even friends made a point of highlighting her unusual features — when she was ten years old, a friend’s mother suggested she receive a nose job.
Judd was born in Granada Hills, California to Michael Ciminella, Jr., an Italian American marketing analyst for the horseracing industry, and Naomi Judd, a well-known country music singer; she has a half-sister, Wynonna Judd, who is also a country music singer. At the time of her birth, her mother was working as a nurse, and wouldn’t become well-known as a singer along with her daughter Wynonna until the early 1980s. Judd’s parents divorced in 1972, and in 1974, her mother took her back to her own native Kentucky, where Judd grew up in poverty. The family sometimes lived without running water, electricity, or a telephone.
Streep was born Mary Louise Streep in Summit, New Jersey, the daughter of Harry William Streep, Jr., a pharmaceutical executive, and Mary W., a commercial artist. Streep’s mother had Swiss, Irish and English ancestry and Streep’s father’s family was of Dutch descent, with distant Sephardic Jewish ancestors from Spain, although Streep is not Jewish. She has two younger brothers, Dana and Harry. Streep was raised in Bernardsville, New Jersey, where she attended and graduated from Bernards High School. She received her B.A. in Drama at Vassar College and earned a M.F.A. from the Yale School of Drama at Yale University.
